Friday Fun - Nobody But Me by The Human Beinz

My Friday Fun selection for this week is 'Nobody But Me' by The Human Beinz. This song was written and performed by The Isley Brothers in 1962, but was a 1967 hit for The Human Beinz, a band from Youngstown, Ohio. Enjoy!

Song #50 On My MP3 Player - Ceremony by New Order

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #50 on my MP3 player is 'Ceremony' by New Order which was released as a single in 1981 and is featured on their compilation album Substance 1987.

New Order is a band that I like but I'm not in love with their music. 'Ceremony' is a really cool song, and it's one of four New Order songs that I like. I'm not hatin' on the band, I'm just keeping it real.

Thursday Under The Covers - Candy by Santiago Gomes and Andrezza Baltru

I decided to see if there was a cool cover of Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson's 'Candy'. I found some videos on YouTube and decided to share a version by Santiago Gomes and Andrezza Baltru. Enjoy!

Song #49 On My MP3 Player - Candy by Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #49 on my MP3 player is 'Candy' by Iggy Pop and Kate Pierson which is the fourth track on Iggy Pop's 1990 album Brick by Brick.

Brick by Brick was released when I was in high school. At the time, I was a volunteer disc jockey at a university radio station. We were allowed to have any kind of format, but the station required we play tracks from albums listed in the light, medium, and heavy rotation lists. There was a copy of Brick by Brick at the station and on the front of the album someone took a black marker and wrote some sort of manifesto stating that Iggy Pop sucked. I decided not to play the album, but heard 'Candy' not long after my time was up sta the station. It's a good song and I hope you enjoy.

Getting Caught Up On Wednesday - Can't Hold Us by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

I have not been the best Lost Soul at times because I've ignored a great deal of mainstream music over the past fourteen years. Fear not kids, I'm spending Wednesday's getting caught up by reviewing some popular artists.

My selection today is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. These two have been hyped and I have never heard a song from these cats. 'Can't Hold Us' is the first song I've heard from Macklemore and Ryan lewis not a bad song, and the video shows us what happened to the old dude from Arrested Development. Also, Macklemore looks like a poor man's version of Donnie Wahlberg. Oh-uh-oh-oh...the right stuff.

Song #48 On My MP3 Player - 'Can't Hardly Wait' (Tim Demo) by The Replacements

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #48 on my MP3 player is the Tim demo version of 'Can't Hardly Wait' by The Replacements which is the opening track on the second disc their 1997 compilation album All For Nothing/Nothing For All.

The Replacements are one of my favorite bands of all time and lead singer Paul Westerberg is one of my favorite songwriters. My good friend Ryan Dellwood introduced me to the greatness that is The Replacements and I have been a fan since the early 90's. Over the years, I have acquired some Replacements albums, bootlegs, demos, and outtakes. Their Tim demo of 'Can't Hardly Wait' is on my MP3 player because I like it more than the studio version from Pleased to Meet Me. This demo version is not as polished but it really rocks. I've included the Pleased to Meet Me version of 'Can't Hardly Wait' for you to compare and discuss.

Guilty Pleasure Tuesday: Break My Stride by Matthew Wilder

Tuesday's are dedicated to my guilty pleasures in music. My selection for this week is Matthew Wilder's 'Break My Stride' which was a hit back in 1983, and it charted in the top ten here in the US.

I found an 80's compilation CD a few weeks ago and this was one of the tracks. There is nothing wrong with a little New Wave Reggae, so I hope you enjoy this week's guilty pleasure selection. As an added bonus, I found Matthew Wilder performing this song on Solid Gold. Enjoy.

Song #47 On My MP3 Player - California by Low

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #47 on my MP3 player is 'California' by Low which is the second track on their 2005 album The Great Destroyer.

I used to know this guy named Brandon and he made me an awesome Christmas mix CD back in 2003, which I still listen to during Christmas time. The opening track to the CD was Low's 'Just Like Christmas'. I really liked the song and wanted to hear more from Low. A few years after discovering Low, I heard 'California' and thought it was a magnificent track. I hope you enjoy this song and are staying warm.

A Case Of The Mondays: King of the Road by Fu Manchu

I do not need any nonsense on Monday, but when it happens I find a song to erase the nonsense. This week I have selected King of the Road by Fu Manchu. This is the fourth track on their 2000 album King of the Road. This is the kind of music you need when Monday morning or evening traffic is nothing but foolishness. Enjoy.

Song #46 On My MP3 Player - Burning Down The House by Talking Heads

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #46 on my MP3 player is 'Burning Down The House' by Talking Heads which is the opening track on their 1983 album Speaking in Tongues.

I remember watching this video back in the day and being freaked out by the image of David Byrne's head being projected onto the street. The song was cool, but it took some time for me to like the video. Enjoy the video and crank up 'Burning Down The House'.

Friday Fun - 123 by Len Barry

It's time to get ready for the weekend, so The Lost Soul is going to hook you up with a fun song. The selection for this week is "123" by Len Barry. This song was a hit for Len Barry, a Philadelphia blue-eyed soul singer, during the fall of 1965, and it peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Len Barry also had a hit with "Like A Baby".

Song #44 On My MP3 Player - Bull in the Heather by Sonic Youth

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #44 on my MP3 player is 'Bull in the Heather' by Sonic Youth which is the second track on their 1994 album Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star.

Sonic Youth is a cool band, but I need them in small doses. If I hear one or two Sonic Youth songs then I'm good, but for some reason if I hear more then I get angry with Sonic Youth. There is no logical explanation. I've been a fan since 1992 when my friend Miles gave me the 'Sugar Kane' CD single as a Christmas gift. 'Bull in the Heather' is a damn good song, so enjoy the official video below which features Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill.

Thursday Under The Covers - Alcoholiday by Alex Chilton

Thursday's are dedicated to finding the best covers on YouTube. I was in a Teenage Fanclub mood and decided to find a cover of 'Alcoholiday', which is featured on their superb 1991 album Bandwagonesque. To my surprise, I found a cover by the late Alex Chilton. Teenage Fanclub had a sound that was influenced by Chilton's band Big Star. There is nothing else I can say, but enjoy this awesome cover by Alex Chilton.

Getting Caught Up On Wednesday - Best I Ever Had by Drake

Wednesday's are dedicated to me getting caught up on the music that I've ignored or overlooked during the past fourteen years. Today, I am taking a look at the music of Drake, a hip-hop artist from Canada. Apparently he's the hotness and I've selected his 2009 hit 'Best I Ever Had' as my first exposure to Drake.

I'm a hip-hop fan, but I'm not feeling this song. The video is funny because Drake is the head coach of The Hooters High School basketball team. Drake took some ridiculous basketball hip-hop video influences from Master P's 'Make 'Em Say Uhh!' and Trick Daddy and Trina's 'Take It To Da House'. It looks like I wasn't missing anything when it comes to Drake.

Song #43 On My MP3 Player - Brokedown Palace by the Grateful Dead

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #43 on my MP3 player is 'Brokedown Palace' by the Grateful Dead, which is the seventh track on their 1970 album American Beauty.

Here is another great track from the Dead's American Beauty album. 'Brokedown Palace' is a beautiful tune, and as I mentioned before that if you think the Dead is nothing but endless hippie jam band music then you are wrong. 'Brokedown Palace' is nice blend of twangy country and folk rock.

Guilty Pleasure Tuesday: Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms

I share my guilty pleasure music on Tuesday's and my selection this week is 'Hey Jealousy' by the Gin Blossoms. This song is featured on their 1992 debut album New Miserable Experience. 'Hey Jealousy' was released in June of 1993 and was a Top 40 hit.

I've been a fan of this song since it was the hotness on the charts. Mainstream alternative rock bands of the 1990's have been the victims of some major hate at times, but I'll defend 'Hey Jealousy' because it's an excellent rock song. If you watched the AV Club's 2012 Undercover series, you might remember that Cursive and Cymbals Eat Guitars covered 'Hey Jealousy'. It was brought up that 'Hey Jealousy' was "shit on" by people, and a guy from Cymbals Eat Guitars said if the song was recorded by Teenage Fanclub then it would be a classic. Ain't that the truth.

Song #42 On MY MP3 Player - Bring The Noise by Anthrax and Public Enemy

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model.  All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #42 on my MP3 player is 'Bring The Noise' by Anthrax and Public Enemy. This song is the second track on Anthrax's 1991 rarities and B-sides album Attack of The Killer B's.

The first time I heard this song is when I was a junior in high school. I was a volunteer DJ at a university radio station and it was required that I played selections from albums in the rotation bin. After a few minutes of checking the list, I found this great collaboration between Anthrax and Public Enemy. 'Bring The Noise' was originally recorded by Public Enemy and is featured on their brilliant album It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. This is a perfect blend of hip-hop and metal. Too bad Korn and Limp Bizkit ruined it for the rest of us.

A Case of The Mondays: The Warrior by Scandal

Monday's suck. You need to be a warrior and slay the beast that is this awful day. Today, I have selected Scandal's 1984 hit 'The Warrior'. Watch the 80's video where lead singer Patti Smyth takes on outcasts from Cirque Du Soleil by shooting at the walls of heartache. Bang! Bang!

Song #41 On My MP3 Player - Brickfield Nights by The Boys

Song #41 on my MP3 player is a late 1970's pop-punk tune from The Boys. 'Brickfield Nights' was released in 1978, and according to their website, it was their 'finest single'. The Boys disbanded in 1982, but reformed in 1999 and have been on tour and in the studio over the past decade.

I first heard this song on the Rhino DIY: Teenage Kicks - UK Pop I (1976 - 1979) CD. The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll is a huge fan of the Rhino DIY series, and I discovered many great bands thanks to those compilations. 'Brickfield Nights' is a great rock song about the good ol' days of hanging out with friends and chasing girls. This is the right kind of pick-me-up rock song you need when you require an energy boost. Enjoy!

Friday Fun: Wooly Bully by Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs

Friday Fun is a new article for The Lost Soul of Rock & Roll. I will select a fun song to get you ready for the weekend. The first song I've selected is 'Wooly Bully' by Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs. This song was released in 1965 and spent 18 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 charts.

Sam the Sham is really Domingo Zamuido who was born in Dallas, Texas. Zamuido formed The Pharaos in 1961, but after some changes they became Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs in 1963. 'Wooly Bully' was not their only hit. They had Top 40 hits with  'Ju Ju Hand' and 'Lil' Red Riding Hood'.

I chose 'Wooly Bully' because it's a perfect selection for Friday Fun. The intro is a brilliant mix of Spanish and English, I had to find a clip from YouTube showing Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs in their outfits. Enjoy!

Song #40 On My MP3 Player - Brand New Love by Superchunk

Superchunk's cover of Sebadoh's 'Brand New Love' is the fortieth song on my MP3 player. Superchunk's version is the thirteenth track on their 1991 album Tossing Seeds (Singles '89-'91).

I had a decent collection of Guided By Voices bootlegs and rarities tapes during the mid to late 1990's, so there were people on the Guided By Voices mailing list willing to trade me a mixtape for a copy of a bootleg or rarities tape. Someone sent me a mixtape with 'Brand New Love' by Superchunk on it and I was really impressed with the song despite the fact that the quality of the mixtape was poor. I was familiar with Superchunk at the time and I decided to find a better quality version of the song on CD.

Sebadoh is a band that I like, but Superchunk's version of 'Brand New Love' blows Lou Barlow and company out of the water. Enjoy!

Thursday Under The Covers - When The Stars Go Blue by Heth & Jed

Thursday Under The Covers is a new series where I post covers from YouTube. Today's selection is 'When The Stars Go Blue' by Heth & Jed, two NYC buskers, authors, and groovy dudes.

I've been a fan of Heth & Jed's music since 2003 and I thought this would be a great way to start off Thursday Under The Covers. 'When The Stars Go Blue' was written and recorded by Ryan Adams in 2001 for his album Gold. Tim McGraw and The Coors have covered this song, but I thought I'd tell you good kids about the musical goodness that is Heth & Jed. Enjoy.

Song #39 On My MP3 Player - Box of Rain by the Grateful Dead

'Box of Rain' by the Grateful Dead is song #39 on my MP3 player. This is the opening track to their 1970 album titled American Beauty. Bassist Phil Lesh is the composer and singer for this track, which was composed by Robert Hunter. Hunter has stated that the song was a tribute to Lesh's dying father.

The Grateful Dead were a popular band when I attended high school from 1988 to 1992, but I didn't get into their music until I was in college. My sister had a Grateful Dead phase, and I borrowed her copy of American Beauty. 'Box of Rain' hit me immediately and it is my favorite Grateful Dead song. American Beauty is a fantastic album, which is more country and blues rock than hippie jams. Take a listen and enjoy.

Getting Caught Up On Wednesday - Mr. November by The National

Catching Up On Wednesday is a new feature at The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll where I try and get caught up on the music that has been released over the past fourteen years. During the late 1980's and 1990's, I was a good Lost Soul, but I've got a great deal of catching up to do in order to be cool and hip. I picked a band at random and decided to check out The National. The song I selected was "Mr. November" which is the thirteenth track from their 2005 album titled Alligator.

Today is the first time that I heard this song. I'm getting a Joy Division and Interpol vibe from these cats, which is a plus in my book. "Mr. November" is a good song, but it hasn't hooked me as a listener. I'll give them a few more chances, so if you have any recommendations then let me know. Maybe I'll take a trip to the library and check out some of their music on CD. I'm old school and that's how I roll. On a side note, I discovered that this band was formed in Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm from Ohio and I refer to Cincinnati as "The Nasty" because I get a real scummy vibe from that city when I visit.

Song #38 On My MP3 Player - Blueprint by Fugazi

'Blueprint' is the fifth track on Fugazi's 1990 album titled Repeater. Fugazi is a rock band from Washington, D.C. that has maintained a D.I.Y. attitude where they have complete control over their music. The band has been on hiatus since 2003 although reunion rumors circulate from time to time.

I'm a big fan of Fugazi and 'Blueprint' is definitely in my top three list of Fugazi tracks of all time. It was late 1992 or early 1993 when I first heard Fugazi. I was a short order cook in a restaurant and I worked with a guy named Scott who one day challenged me to make him an impressive mix tape. I have no recollection of what I placed on the tape, but I was coming out of my classic rock and hard rock phase, so it might have been heavy on Zeppelin, Kiss, Sabbath, and Pink Floyd. Scott liked my tape, but he gave me a tape of important music. His tape introduced me to The Velvet Underground, Fishbone, and Fugazi. I went out and purchased what I could find from The Velvet Underground and Fugazi. My first Fugazi album was 13 Songs and then I purchased Repeater. Both albums are amazing and I hope you dig 'Blueprint'. Enjoy.

Song #37 On My MP3 Player - Blue Moon of Kentucky by Bill Monroe

Bill Monroe's 'Blue Moon of Kentucky' is a bluegrass classic that was written in 1946 and has been covered by many artists including Elvis Presley. The version I'm sharing today is not the original 1940's recording, but an uptempo version that was recorded in the 1950s.

I'm originally from Ohio and I've been told that my dad's side of the family has "Family from Kentucky". The Bluegrass state is a little over an hour drive from my hometown, and I've had some interesting journeys to Kentucky. A friend of mine that lives in Cincinnati was married seven years ago, and booked us a hotel in Covington, Kentucky, which is just a quick drive over the Ohio River. While in Covington, my friend went to a bar with my wife and me. A bluegrass band was playing, and they did an amazing cover of "Blue Moon of Kentucky". Enjoy!

While looking for a Bill Monroe video to include with today's post, I found this cover of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" from a bluegrass band in Japan. These guys do an awesome job!

Guilty Pleasure Tuesday: Funplex by The B-52's

This is a new feature at The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll. Tuesday's are my days to share with the readers some of my guilty pleasures in music. The first selection for Guilty Pleasure Tuesday is 'Funplex' by The  B-52's. This song is the fifth track on their 2008 album titled Funplex.

My wife is a huge fan of The B-52's and she has me hooked on their music. Most of their music. 'Rock Lobster' still freaks me out for some reason. 'Funplex' has been stuck in my head recently by The B-52's and the icing on the cake, as always, is the vocals of Fred Schneider who delivers one of his best lines ever when he says, "Faster Pussycat! Thrill! Thrill! I'm at the mall on a diet pill". This is pop music brilliance right here, kids. Enjoy the video below which features Fred raising hell in mall while using a Segway.

A Case of the Mondays: Living After Midnight by Judas Priest

This is a new feature at The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll where I pick a song that will pump you up for the crummiest day of the week. My first selection for this series is 'Living After Midnight' by Judas Priest. This is the seventh song on the band's 1980 album British Steel. You can't go wrong with Judas Priest when it comes to finding a song to get you pumped up and ready for Monday.

This is the first song I ever heard from Judas Priest. It was 1990 and my guitar instructor asked if I wanted to learn 'Living After Midnight' by Judas Priest. I admitted that I didn't know the song and he decided it was time to get me introduced to Judas Priest. You truly can not go wrong with this song, so go ahead and click the video below and may your day get better.

Song #36 On My MP3 Player - Black Coffee In Bed by Squeeze

The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll has returned! I couldn't walk away from this music blog, so one of my 2014 resolution's is to get this blog back up and running.

This is the second song by Squeeze on my MP3 player and it is a longtime favorite. 'Black Coffee In Bed' is the seventh track on the band's 1982 album Sweets from a Stranger. It's a little known Cliff Clavin fact that Elvis Costello and Paul Young provide the "Out with a friend" backing vocals during the chorus of this song.

I first heard 'Black Coffee in Bed' while watching MTV during the early 80's and I instantly liked the song. As time went on, I forgot about 'Black Coffee In Bed' until '95 or '96 when I discovered that one of my college roommates owned Squeeze's Singles - 45's and Under. I borrowed the CD and was reconnected to some of their best songs like "Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)" and "Black Coffee In Bed".

It has been ages since I have watched the video and it's a pretty good effort for the low budget early 80's days of music videos. Glenn Tilbrook, the lead singer, serves as the narrator for a story of young love torn apart by infidelity. My MP3 player has plenty of 80's pop gems and this a good one so enjoy!
