Song #63 On My MP3 Player - Dancing With Myself by Billy Idol

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #63 on my MP3 player is 'Dancing With Myself' by Billy Idol which is the eleventh track on his 1982 album Billy Idol.

I just might have been the only person in the world today to Google "Billy Idol discography". I forgot Billy originally recorded a version of 'Dancing With Myself' with his band Generation X. This version of 'Dancing With Myself' is the second version and for some reason I don't think you really care. There are times when I look over the songs on my MP3 player and wonder why I uploaded them in the first place. This is one of those songs, but it is pretty damn good.

Thursday Under The Covers - People Covering Pavement's Cut Your Hair

I decided to find some covers of 'Cut Your Hair.

Here are two dudes called Dual covering 'Cut Your Hair'. I did some half-assed research and I think they are from Spain. It's nice to see people from other countries covering some awesome 90's indie rock tunes.

This is a guy named Stephen Jones who does another acoustic cover version. He kinda looks like Kyle MacLachlan and sounds like Mac McCaughan.

My wife is from Pennsylvania so enjoy Bengal Gold's cover at some place in New Hope, PA.

Finally, we have a band called Camera from the South Pacific.

Song #62 On My MP3 Player - Cut Your Hair by Pavement

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #62 on my MP3 player is 'Cut Your Hair' by Pavement which is the fourth track on their 1994 album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.

Indie rock from the 90's makes up the majority of songs on my MP3 player. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain is Pavement's commercial breakthrough album that introduced me to their music. While I love Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, I've got to say that Wowee Zowee is my favorite Pavement album. 'Cut Your Hair' is about the music industry, and in my opinion it is about how the 90's were a transition period from big hair metal to alternative rock. Enjoy!

Getting Caught Up On Wednesday - Holy by Frightened Rabbit

The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll is late to the party, but I am getting caught up on the music of the past decade. I will use every Wednesday to talk about a song that I've just discovered. Frightened Rabbit is a band I know by name, but I know nothing about their music. I've learned that they are a Scottish band and that they have been together for over a decade. I picked 'Holy' at random and am very impressed. They've got the folky indie pop thing going on, which is hit or miss for me, but these guys get it right. I think it's the Scottish accents. Well done, Frightened Rabbit.

Song #61 On My MP3 Player - Crush Story by Too Much Joy

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #61 on my MP3 player is 'Crush Story' by Too Much Joy which is the fourth track on their 1991 album Cereal Killers.

The first time I heard Too Much Joy was during the summer of 1991 when I volunteered at a college radio station. Their cover of LL Cool J's 'That's A Lie' was on the heavy rotation list and I was instantly hooked on that song. I put 'That's A Lie' on a mixtape and a year later I purchased their next album Mutiny. I have no idea why it took me so long to listen to Cereal Killers because Mutiny is brilliant power pop. My favorite track on Cereal Killers is 'Crush Story', which is the song of the day at The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll. Enjoy!

Guilty Pleasure Tuesday - Radioactive by The Firm

Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Paul Rodgers (Free & Bad Company), Tony Franklin, and Chris Slade (Manfred Mann's Earth Band) were The Firm. They released an eponymous debut album in 1985, and the big hit off that album was 'Radioactive'. I'm lumping this into my guilty pleasure world because The Firm is considered by some as forgettable 80's corporate rock. 'Radioactive' is a jam and I hope you enjoy this week's guilty pleasure selection.

Song #60 On My MP3 Player - Courage (For Hugh MacLennan) by The Tragically Hip

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #60 on my MP3 player is 'Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)' by The Tragically Hip which is the opening track on their 1992 album Fully Completely.

The Tragically Hip were a band I knew by name only during the 1990's because the music 'zines I would read would have advertisements for Tragically Hip shows in cities like Detroit. 'Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)' was my first Tragically Hip song, and it was used during a great movie called The Sweet Hereafter. I decided to find that song and purchased Fully Completely on CD, and this is one of a few tracks from that album on my MP3 player. Now you might be wondering who Hugh MacLennan is, and the answer is that he was the author of a book titled The Watch That Ends the Night.  'Courage (For Hugh MacLennan)' was inspired by The Watch That Ends the Night and apparently the lyrics reference the book. Enjoy!

A Case Of The Mondays - Keep On Knocking by Death

Snow keeps on knocking on my door. This has been one hell of a winter here in Michigan and I'm officially done shoveling snow. I have a case of the Monday's due to our latest forecast so I'm going to play 'Keep on Knocking' by Death.

Death was a pre-punk trio from Detroit, Michigan and you need to watch a documentary titled A Band Called Death to see their amazing story. Enjoy.

Song #59 On My MP3 Player - Corduroy by Peal Jam

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #59 on my MP3 player is 'Corduroy' by Pearl Jam which is the eighth track on their 1994 album Vitalogy.

Pearl Jam is a band that I respect, but I can only take them in small doses. Sonic Youth is another example of bands I can only handle in small doses. If I hear two or three songs from these acts per week then I'm still a fan. If I hear more than that on a weekly basis then I hate them with a passion. It is a strange condition. The only Pearl Jam song I can handle on a daily basis is 'Corduroy', which is the one and only Pearl Jam track on my MP3 player. Enjoy!

Song #58 On My MP3 Player - Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #58 on my MP3 player is 'Come On Eileen' by Dexy's Midnight Runners which is the tenth track on their 1982 album Too-Rye-Ay.

The songs of the 80's are well represented on my MP3 player. I've been a fan of this song since it was the hotness back in 1982. One time I sang this song at karaoke and it was a rather decent effort on my part. That's all I got for you today. Enjoy.

Thursday Under The Covers - Come Dancing by Hot Sauce Willie

'Come Dancing' was the song of the day, so I decided to find a cool cover of this classic tune by The Kinks. My search led me to this cover by Hot Sauce Willie. Enjoy.

Song #57 On My MP3 Player - Come Dancing by The Kinks

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #57 on my MP3 player is 'Come Dancing' by The Kinks which is the fourth track on their 1983 album State of Confusion.

You've got to love The Kinks. Some think their career ended during the mid 1960's when the British Invasion lost its steam. The Kinks were able to produce some great music during the 1970's and 80's, which includes today's selection of 'Come Dancing'. I'm a sucker at times for nostalgia songs, so I hope you enjoy this song about the good ol' days of dancing the night away at the club. Enjoy.

Getting Caught Up on Wednesday - Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars

The Lost Soul of Rock and Roll is late to the party, but I am getting caught up on the music of the past decade. I will use every Wednesday to talk about a song that I've just discovered. 'Locked Out Of Heaven' was a big hit for Bruno Mars, and I'm really impressed with this song. Are they sampling the riff of 'Talking in Your Sleep' by The Romantics? I hear a little bit of The Fixx's 'One Thing Leads to Another' as well. It doesn't matter because this song is a jam!

Song #56 On My MP3 Player - Cliches by The Neighborhoods

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #56 on my MP3 player is 'Cliches' by The Neighborhoods which is the tenth track on their 1987 album Reptile Men.

I first heard the music of The Neighborhoods on a Rhino punk compilation CD titled Mass Ave.: The Boston Scene (1975-1983). The song was titled 'No Place Like Home' and I wanted to hear more of their music. I used to know a guy named Clem Lane and he was a great guy that was subscribed to a Guided by Voices mailing list. Clem was a guy that knew just about every bad that ever existed. I'm not joking. One day I posted to the Guided by Voices mailing list and asked where I could get more of The Neighborhoods music. Clem responded and sent me a mix tape. I became a fan of The Neighborhoods, or The 'Hoods as they are called back in Boston.

The Neighborhoods were a Boston band formed in 1977 and it was 1992 when they disbanded. The band started off with a scrappy pop punk style that matured into a slick rock sound. 'Cliches' is a great example of their later sound and I hope you enjoy today's selection.

Guilty Pleasure Tuesday - You Get What You Give by New Radicals

This is the time of the week where I share my musical guilty pleasures. 'You Get What You Give' by New Radicals is my selection for the week. This song was released in 1998 and was a top 40 hit for the band. I'll admit that I've liked this song since I first heard it on the radio or saw the video on MTV. For some reason, I hear a little bit of World Party when I hear 'You Get What You Give'. Enjoy.

Song #55 On My MP3 Player - Claire Monet by Screeching Weasel

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #55 on my MP3 player is 'Claire Monet' by Screeching Weasel which is the seventeenth track on their 1993 album Anthem For A New Tomorrow.

I was introduced to the music of Screeching Weasel back in 1992, and I was instantly hooked by the music of this pop punk rock band from Chicago. It was sometime during the fall of 1993 when I was CD shopping and I saw Anthem For A New Tomorrow. I did not know a single track on the album, but I purchased it with high expectations. Screeching Weasel did not let me down and Anthem For A New Tomorrow is my favorite Screeching Weasel album, so I hope you enjoy today's selection. You can listen to the song by clicking here.

Song #54 On My MP3 Player - Chocolate Cake by Crowded House

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #54 on my MP3 player is 'Chocolate Cake' by Crowded House which was the opening track on their 1991 album Woodface.

Crowded House is a personal favorite and Woodface is well represented on my MP3 player. I first heard 'Chocolate Cake' back in 1991 when I was a volunteer DJ at a college radio station. The only Crowded House song I knew up to that point was 'Don't Dream It's Over'. 'Chocolate Cake' was a song that got me motivated to check out Crowded House's catalog, and it is a damn fine catalog of music. Enjoy.

A Case Of The Mondays - World Shut Your Mouth by Julian Cope

Today you need Julian Cope's 1987 song 'World Shut Your Mouth' because Monday is mouthy as hell.

Friday Fun - Tighten Up by Archie Bell and The Drells

This week's Friday Fun selection is 'Tighten Up' by Archie Bell & The Drells. They were a band from Houston, Texas that had a major hit in 1968 with 'Tighten Up'. This is early funk music and it is the right kind of song to make your Friday just a little bit better. Have a great weekend.

Song #53 On My MP3 Player - Chickamauga by Uncle Tupelo

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #53 on my MP3 player is 'Chickamauga' by Uncle Tupelo which was the fifth track on their 1993 album Anodyne.

I first heard Uncle Tupelo during an episode of MTV's The Week in Rock. They were talking about how the band dissolved and how Jeff Tweedy went to form Wilco while Jay Farrar formed Son Volt. They were playing some clips of Uncle Tupelo music and one of those clips was the video for 'Chickamauga'. I was instantly hooked by the song, plus I'm also a fan of the Civil War, so that was a nice added bonus. Anodyne is a fantastic album, and it's my favorite by Uncle Tupelo, so there are some more Anodyne tracks on my MP3 player. Enjoy.

Song #52 On My MP3 Player - Cherub Rock by Smashing Pumpkins

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #52 on my MP3 player is 'Cherub Rock' by Smashing Pumpkins which was the opening track on their 1993 album Siamese Dream.

I first heard 'Cherub Rock' during the summer of 1993, and it was not long after my first listen that I purchased Siamese Dream. It was not long after 'Cherub Rock' was released that the Smashing Pumpkins made it big and my friend Ryan Dellwood had a "I told you so" moment. Dellwood owned their 1991 debut album Gish and was proclaiming in '91 that they would be a popular band. 'Cherub Rock' is my favorite Smashing Pumpkins song and I hope you enjoy the 90's fuzzy rock.

A Case Of The Mondays: Cherry Bomb by The Runaways

Monday sucks, so crank up The Runaways' 1976 rock anthem.

Song #51 On My MP3 Player - Changes by Sugar

I have decided to share with the Lost Soul faithful every song that is stored on my MP3 player which is a Philips GoGear Vibe 4G model. All posts are in alphabetical order. Song #51 on my MP3 player is 'Changes' by Sugar which was the third track on their 1992 album Copper Blue.

Copper Blue is one of my favorite albums. I first heard the album at a record store in Columbus, Ohio during the Fall of 1992 while visiting a friend in college. I should have bought the album then and there but didn't for some reason. Not long after that trip, I heard Copper Blue at a record store in my hometown mall. I pulled the trigger and purchased that album, which I still listen to some 22 years later.

This was the grunge era and former Husker Du lead singer Bob Mould put together a trio that developed an album ahead of its time. 'Changes' is a fine example of how great Copper Blue was and is to this very day an amazing rock album. Enjoy.
